Hello Obeo’ers! Today we are back with yet another feature post and this week we are focusing on ReCreate. We have been massive fans of these guys for a while now and support everything they stand for. ReCreate is a social enterprise that produces accessible & affordable art materials and educational supplies. The company sources unwanted, end of line, surplus materials from businesses. These are then made available to members such as schools, preschools, community and special needs groups. ReCreate help companies to reduce waste whilst helping other members of the community to stretch their budgets. At present they are diverting approximately over 30 tonnes of waste material from landfill annually. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed! They currently have over 800 members and have won a number of awards. Not bad for a business that’s been in operation for just under four years!
What exactly do they do?
ReCreate redistributes would be waste material to members of the community thus diverting it from landfill. The materials are then supplied to creative groups working with people of all ages. They have a huge range of versatile, fun and safe materials available in their Ballymount store. All materials are imaginatively displayed throughout the store to promote creativity and encourage foraging and browsing. The process of using waste material to create something new is known as upcycling. It is more carbon efficient then recycling as the materials do not need to be reprocessed. Use of these ‘waste’ materials in projects and activities teaches kids to be more mindful of what they waste. Rather than throwing something in the bin they may be more likely to consider the other possibilities it may hold.
How do they do it?
So how exactly do ReCreate pull this all off? Well, they simply partner with a number of major Irish manufacturers and small businesses and collect surplus materials from them that would otherwise end up in landfill. To date they have worked with companies such as Bewley’s, Avoca and Moy Park. They offer free collection on an on-going or ad-hoc basis. This helps companies to save on waste disposal costs. It also allows them to be more environmentally friendly & to give back to the community.
