Give the earth a hug this Valentine’s Day.

Alternative ideas to show someone special (and the earth) that you care.

There are a few stories about the origin of St Valentine’s Day. Some believe it originated from the ancient Roman festival Lupercalia, to celebrate the start of spring.  Another theory is that the Christian church invented it to remember Valentine a priest turned saint. Some even suggest that Valentine’s Day is simply a marketing ploy dreamed up by Hallmark to sell more gift cards. Whatever the origin of the celebration I think we can all agree that St Valentine’s day has become far too commercial. It not so much about showing the love anymore but about ‘buying’ the love!

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be like this. With a little bit of effort you can make a Valentine’s Day to remember by showing the love and giving a little nod to planet earth in the process. Here’s a few ideas to get you started.

1. Bake it don’t buy it.

You can easily bake you way into someone’s heart just so long as it involves chocolate, lots and lots of chocolate. The good news is that you don’t have to be an expert baker to impress. The queen of indulgence herself, Nigella Lawson has some fool proof and impressive recipes for rocky road and chocolate brownies. And, if baking really isn’t your thing and the result is a complete flop then don’t worry about it; it’s the thought that counts. Right?!

2. Make a memory

There are so many great things to see and do. So why not make your gift a shared memory for both of you? Theatre or gig tickets are a great alternative to physical gifts and have the added bonus to doubling up as a date night! It doesn’t even have to cost money. The Dublin Event Guide is a great resource for fun and free events happening in the capital.

3. Make it last

Most of the traditional Valentine’s gifts like flowers and chocolates are very fleeting. By the end of the week you’re left with an empty box of chocolates and some very wilted flowers all destined for the recycling and brown bin. If you do want to show love with a gift why not make it a gift that will last. Instead of buying a bunch of flowers buy a house plant. Or choose a gift that they will use every day like a keep cup or lunch box or if you really want to go to extremes a personalised printed t-shirt (lucky them!).

4. Get crafty

You don’t have to be the best artist in the world or the most profound poet to create something beautiful for someone special. Sometimes just writing a note for someone you care about, making a card or framing a picture can be the best gift of all. And, if you need a splash of inspiration there is always Pinterest…
